FIFA World Club’s Cup
Kashima Antlers vs. Real Madrid 1-3
The Kashima Antlers were defeated by Real Madrid in a semi-final for the FIFA World Club Cup. Kashima Antlers came out in a 4-4-2 line up with goalkeeper Kwoun (1), Shoji (3), Jung (35), Nishi (22), Yamamoto (16) as defenders, Endo (25), Nagaki (6), Hugo Leonardo (4), and Abe (30) as midfielders and Doi (8) and Serginho (18) as strikers.
Real Madrid’s line up included a 4-3-3 line with goalkeeper Courtors (25), defenders Cavajal (2), Varani (5), Ramos (4), Marcelo (12), midfielders Modric (10), Llorentis (18), and Kroos (8), and finally with attackers Vasquez (17), Benzema (9), and Bale (11).
The Saturday game started with a tense start up with the Antlers attempting to strike first but gradually failing to capitalize on attack with a missed corner kick header. The second attempt saw a Antlers shooting just wide to the right for another missed opportunity. The Antlers defense was looking well as Gareth Bale made a clean break until being stopped by a sliding tackle. At 10:43, Benzema attacked from the right side with a shot to the hands of the keeper.
After much back and forth from both teams, the first goal came with Gareth Bale (11) doing the give and go with Marcelo to get in the area and strike to the right side of the keeper at 43:24 of the first half. Real Madrid was up 1-0.
At 52:30 of the second half, the Antlers defender passes the ball back to the keeper and Gareth Bale (11) was again able to steal the ball after the miscommunication between keeper and defender of the Antlers leading to Bale running with the ball to the right side of the box and outpacing the keeper to score an easy goal after the difficult steal. Real Madrid was up 2-0 at this time. Finally the third goal came after after Marcelo filtered a ball to the left side of the Antler’s box where Gale was all alone leading to a vicious strike with the left so that the ball could travel to the top right side of the net past the keeper. Bale would score this at 54:42 in the second half, two minutes after his second goal.
The match was now 3-0 at 54:42 and the Antlers appeared to have lost the confidence it had once it started the game. Antlers were able to come back and strike the goal of honor that would be there first and only goal of the match. A well built play had Doi hit the ball with his right foot from a header from his team mate after masterful control in a small area littered with defenders. The ball passed to the left of two defenders and the Real Madrid goalkeeper at the 80th minute.
Real Madrid passes to the next round and will face Alai after Alai was able to defeat River Plate. Gareth Bale looks impressive with a hat trick scored against a quick team that had a good defense in place until broken down by the careful and skillful attack accompaniment of Marcelo and Bale.
