Sound Teaching

“I charge you in the presence of GOD and of Christ Jesus, who is to judge the living and the dead, and by his appearing and his kingdom; preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort, with complete patience and teaching. For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander of into myths. As for you, always be sober-minded, endure suffering, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry.” – 2Timothy 4: 1-5

In 2 Timothy 4, Paul is describing very important things that must be done to continue spreading the Gospel as well as making sure that we are on the correct path of the LORD. We get a very intense sentence in the first verse where we are instructed to preach the Gospel as we will be judged by the living LORD.

After a careful study, I learned that when Jesus was in the palace of the governor, He was being judged for nothing. There was nothing wrong that Jesus had done. He had angered some with words, but did no evil or harm. Instead what was happening was that the people who had decided to judge Jesus were actually being condemned by themselves and their actions. In a reversal of what appears to be true and what is true, Jesus was actually innocent while those that were guilty threw their verbal and legalistic stones at Jesus. Little did they know that the humble servant knew all that was happening even prior to the events that led to each circumstance.

The GOD of Jacob cannot be judged. No one can judge the GOD of Jacob. No one. As such, Jesus cannot be judged. Yet, the world attempted to judge Jesus and only inflicted damage on itself. You can read about the events that preceded those who judged Jesus. Pontius Pilate and Caiphas did not have their careers elevated or their life improve after the events that transpired. Like Judas, there was judgment that occurred due to their actions that inflicting damage to themselves.

Through this, we know that GOD and Christ Jesus will judge the living and dead when Jesus returns. The humble servant that was incorrectly, unjustly, and immorally condemned will return as the victor and king and judge the nations. Therefore, we are instructed as followers to be able to teach in and out of season. While right now it seams that we are out of season, we are able to preach and teach.

We are to continue preaching because of the times of when people will not understand sound doctrine. They will want teachings that are specially suited to their niche desires. What is sound teaching? As long as we mention righteousness and certain biblical beliefs we are good? We are to preach the truth? Many will answer like Pilates did when Jesus spoke that He was the truth. Isn’t truth relative? Like multiple versions of the truth and stuff. No. Sound doctrine means keeping to the faith with its biblical instruction even when we are tempted and even when we sin. No one is perfect, but we should attempt to continue striving.
