Returning to the theme of finding our way, Proverbs 16 reiterates the importance of being able to find the correct way and following it without distractions. If there is a highway of uprightness that turns away from evil, there is also a highway of evil. From these two roads exist two different lifestyles or ways of life. We are to follow the correct way of life that will allow us to follow the will of the LORD and not turn aside to evil.
How will we know if one of the two roads is the correct road? We are instructed that what is good is the correct road. The road that allows us to continue strong in our faith and understanding in the fear of the LORD. We are instructed to preserve and guard this specific way of the upright. If the verb that is used is guards, it may mean that it may be a road that is traveled with awareness and instruction. We are to guard our ways and be strong in the word of the LORD to thwart anything that comes against this specific way.
One of the interpretations of preserving one’s life by walking the upright highway is that their physical life is preserved. The other interpretation would be that their spiritual life is preserved. And a third interpretation which would be the probable interpretation would be that both physical and spiritual life are preserved in the LORD. If He instructs us in the way we choose go, He will also protect us. Where the LORD guides, He provides.
