“How can a young man keep his way pure? By guarding it according to your word. With my whole heart I seek you; let me not wander from your commandments! I have stored up your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you. Blessed are you, O LORD; teach me your statutes! With my lips I declare all the rules of your mouth. In the way of your testimonies I delight as much as in all riches. I will meditate on your precepts and fix my eyes on your ways. I will delight in your statutes; I will not forget your word.” -Psalm 119:9-16
With so many distractions that exist, it may be difficult to keep our eyes on the prize. There are many ideas, events, and words fighting for our attention in each day. Yet, we are reminded that we must focus on what really matters. While there are many things that are important to us, we must stay focused on what really matters. Prioritizing the important things in our lives is a way to make time for what will help us in the long run and prevent us from procrastinating or forgetting to do them all together.
If we start our day with our focus on the LORD and serving the LORD, our day gets better. I have experiences with procrastination and I have misused a day at times and it all started because of how I started the day. Instead of focusing on the goals of the day, I drifted into the distraction of everyday lives. Caring too much about a news event, listening to things that don’t really help or advance my goals, or simply not keeping track of time with a hobby. After prioritizing how I start my day, I quickly see how putting the LORD first actually helps me get the day started in the correct manner.
Similar to walking to our destination and taking a detour for a few minutes or hours, the same can be said when we misuse the time we are given to get our goals accomplished. I fight with this everyday and am trying to get better at it. So how can we keep our way pure? David says that, “By guarding it according to your word.” Keeping the word of the LORD in our minds and hearts allows us to focus on the purpose that the LORD has for us. The commandments are a way to stay on the right path and not swerve. If we love the LORD with all our soul, heart, and mind, we will not misuse the time He has given us to serve Him and bring glory to Him. By keeping His word, we store it in our hearts.
While the heart has been used as a symbol of our intentions and beliefs. Therefore, if we believe and keep the word that He has entrusted us, it will reside in our hearts. By meditating daily on the word, we are capable of understanding the word and the manner in which to guard our ways.
